Applied Computing - Level 6 NQ

What is special about this course?

NQ Applied Computing is a Level 6 course which will help you develop knowledge and skills in a variety of different foundation principles and technologies to build your computing career on. The course includes:

• 2D and 3D game design and development
• Computer programming using Python and C#
• Maintaining and refurbishing hardware and systems
• Networking, infrastructure and cyber security

The course includes an opportunity for work experience in a Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Centre, and to develop collaborative projects. Through this course you will be able to develop your academic and research skills for progression on to Higher Education programmes such as the HNC in Computing, and ultimately to study for an honours degree in Software Development or Networking and Cyber Security.

Entry requirements

Successful completion of the NQ Digital Design and Games Development. Completion of a computing related subject at National 5. As part of the application process, you will be invited for an interview and will be asked to complete an aptitude test.

This programme offers intermediate to advanced development for learners in two broad areas.

1.    Industry specific foundational skills in:

c.    IT Support with hardware and systems

2.    Professional development:
a.    Work experience
b.    Team project work
c.    Independent research and academic skills

Software Design and Development
Software design and development is contained within a number of units, contextualised to interests of games and game development through the Computer Games units, and visually impactful projects through the Computing: Applications Development, and Computing: Project units. 

The Information Literacy unit contributes to the understanding of Data Driven Design principles applicable to many modern software development methodologies.

Infrastructure and Cyber Security
Computer Network Fundamentals, Network Literacy provide for a sound underpinning of skills relating to the development of secure modern and cloud-based infrastructure. This core knowledge is essential for developing professionals with central understanding for working in any computing environment or role in a security-focused workplace.

IT Support with Hardware and Systems
IT Support roles have been a mainstay for entry into computing careers for many years. This is established through the Hardware and Networking modules, along with the work experience opportunities this develops through UHI Perth’s WEEE Centre.

Professional Development and Work Experience
Work experience opportunities are available through our WEEE Centre giving students the opportunity to support professionals refurbishing computer equipment for redistribution and resale.

Team Project
The Computing: Project module focuses on the development of a software product as part of a team. This unit allows learners to explore the rigours of modern DevOps models. Team Project will work with the PDP module, building on knowledge and skills from the rest of the course to give learners an opportunity to engage in non-trivial project development.

Independent Research and Academic Skills
The Information Literacy and Academic Skills modules help develop the ability to develop research skills and present information in a professional way.

Fees

Most full-time students will have their fees paid.

Students on part-time courses may also be eligible to have their course fees waived.
