What is special about this course?
This course will offer you the opportunity to create a fine art or design or photography or digital media focussed portfolio as well as building skills, knowledge and understanding of the creative process.
There will be two separate routes for this course:
- Contemporary art and design focus;
- Lens based and digital design focus
Entry requirements
Entrance to this course is by interview and portfolio evidence. Recommended requirements are qualifications at SCQF Level 5 or equivalent in art and design disciplines or a Higher in Art and Design. Candidates are expected to evidence knowledge and ability within the arts discipline. Enthusiasm, creativity and self motivation are also required.
Guided by professional practitioners, you will sample a range of specialities within the creative industries, including:
- Drawing;
- Graphic design
- Illustration;
- Context and colour
- Digital media
- Painting;
- Photograpy;
- Animation and video
The studio environment encourages sharing of ideas and understanding, and nurtures a supportive work and social environment. The majority of your time will be spent on project-based activities and learning fundamental practical and critical skills, creating a transition between work that you have carried out at school and potential future study in a specialist art, design or lens based subject.
In this course you will also study five Core Skills including communication, ICT and numeracy, which can help you to gain the essential skills required for life, learning and employment.

Most full-time students will have their fees paid.
Students on part-time courses may also be eligible to have their course fees waived.
What can I do on completion of my course?
If you wish to take your study further you may be able to progress to the HNC/D Visual Communications or HNC/D Contemporary Art Practice.
This course creates many junior opportunities within the creative industries including: advertising; graphic design; photography; fashion; new media and television.
