What is special about this course?
Our NQ Engineering Skills is ideal for students starting out in engineering as it provides practical hands-on training in workshop skills including sheet metal work, fitting and various welding techniques. The course is also suitable as a refresher course for updating your engineering skills.
Entry requirements
No formal entry are required, but you will be invited to discuss your application with us and your application and interview will form part of the selection process.
You will learn a number of practical skills including:
- Bench fitting
- Sheet metal work
- Manual Metal Arc welding
- MIG Welding
- TIG Welding
And you will learn how to work effectively and safely. In addition to the practical skills, you will develop you will also enhance your employability through the enhancement of your communication, numeracy and information technology abilities.

Fees
Most full-time students will have their fees paid.
Students on part-time courses may also be eligible to have their course fees waived.
What can I do on completion of my course?
Following a successful completion of the NQ (including the mandatory unit Mathematics for Science 1) you can progress to the NQ Engineering Practice Level 5 or SVQ Performing Engineering Operations Level 2.
There is currently a shortage of engineers with practical skills and this course will give you the basic skills to progress into a range of engineering disciplines including the oil and gas sector, both on-shore and off-shore renewables and general manufacturing.
