Sport and Fitness Level 6 NQ

What is special about this course?

This course will allow learners to apply their current knowledge of current philosophies of sport and fitness in a practical context, as well as facilitating knowledge at a higher level of study.  The course will cover a range of subjects with fitness and sport as well as providing the opportunity for learners to undertake three specialist credits in either indoor sport or fitness capacity.

This is a Category 1 PVG course. During the course you will have contact with vulnerable groups of people, therefore to successfully complete the course, you are required to be a member of the PVG Scheme. Entry requirements

You should show active involvement in sport and fitness activities.  Applicants should have a core skills profile in the following two competencies at a minimum of SCQF Level 5 (Communication and ICT) and attend an interview.  Students must also be accepted as a Protecting Vulnerable Groups (PVG) scheme through the college system (Placements cannot be started without this).

External applicants must also have at least 5 Standard Grades at Credit/General SCQF Level 5, Intermediate 2 or National 5

Internal candidates must have passed the NC Sport and Fitness (Indoor or Outdoor) L5 Group Award (12 credits), PDP unit and must have a positive reference from their PAT.

Those who are returning to learning and who bring relevant life experience will also be considered.  They will be required to write a brief written assignment prior to being offered a place on the course.

Students on the NQ Sport and Fitness course will study a common core of subjects which include:

  • Basic sports coaching techniques;
  • Human physiology in the development of performance;
  • Physical education: Factors impacting on performance;
  • Individual performance in sport - analysis and evaluation
  • Healthy eating;
  • Volunteering

Students who choose to study NQ Higher Sport and Fitness will also complete a National Progression Award (NPA) in Exercise and Fitness Leadership which includes Cardiovascular Training and Fixed and Free Weight Training.

Students on part-time courses may also be eligible to have their course fees waived.

This course leads to HNC Fitness, Health and Exercise or HNC Coaching and Developing Sport.

Jobs might include leisure attendant, leisure centre attendant, sports club attendant, fitness/gym attendant, sports development assistant.
