Students start new primary teaching course
Perth College UHI has welcomed its first cohort of primary teaching students.
Offered through the University of the Highlands and Islands, the Professional Graduate Diploma in Primary Education consists of 18 weeks study at the university, plus 19 weeks professional practice in schools. This is the first year the course will be delivered at Perth College UHI.
Lecturer Katrina MacIntyre explained:
“This course is an exciting opportunity for the people of Perth and Kinross as it allows students to develop the knowledge and skills required for their career in teaching without moving away from home. It has a focus on building strong links with the local authority whilst educating teachers to work within our schools. Our new students are already prepared for their upcoming placement and we are looking forward to strengthening relationships with our local primary schools.”
Student Michelle Millar added:
“I choose this course as I have always wanted to be a teacher. I am interested in the way children learn and develop and would like to be a part of this process. I chose Perth for two reasons. The first is that I started my academic journey at Perth College UHI, first completing my NC followed by my HNC before completing my degree. Therefore, it felt right to finish my journey at Perth and I am honoured to be able to do so. Secondly, I like the way the course is delivered through a blended learning approach, which is structured using work based placements, VLE, video conferencing and collaborative group work as this fits in with my family life.”
