About this course

Upon successful completion, learners will achieve a National Progression Award (NPA) at SCQF level 5.

The course is aimed at senior phase school pupils who wish to develop their skills and knowledge in an engineering context.

This NPA in Engineering suitable for learners considering employment within the Engineering sector and will equip them with the knowledge, skills and experiences employers want to see. The Engineering sector, in all its forms, is vital to Scotland’s economy and society.  There is an urgent need at significant scale to attract and grow a fresh pipeline of talent into fabrication and welding in Scotland and this course provides a suitable entry point to this pathway for learners.

Course content

The course consists of 8 units, with a mix of practical and theory; including fabrication and welding skills, electrical principles and understanding industry in an engineering context.

This course is designed to allow learners a degree of specialisation in engineering relevant to the area of engineering covered by the award.  It Includes opportunities for learners to develop meta-skills to support the active development of professional practice and behaviours and to give learners self-awareness and understanding that they can use these meta-skills to increase and discuss their employability.

At least one from:

  • National 4 or 5 Mathematics (Applications of Maths is not accepted)
  • National 4 or 5 Physics
  • Skills for Work Engineering at SCQF 4 or 5
