Over the past 45 years, UNESCO has designated 701 Biosphere Reserves in 124 countries; about 250 million people live in them.  Over this period, the concept of biosphere reserves has changed from an emphasis on biodiversity conservation and research to one on sustainable development – including conservation – at the regional scale.

In his talk, Professor Price will explore the evolution of this concept, as well as the challenges and opportunities of the unique World Network of Biosphere Reserves.  He has had a long involvement with UNESCO’s Man and the Biosphere (MAB) programme at all levels.  He has been a member of the UK MAB Committee, including periods as chair and vice-chair, since 1993, and has advised on the designation of biosphere reserves in many countries. 

Globally, he represents the UK on the International Coordinating Council of the MAB Programme, has acted as its rapporteur, and led the preparation of the current 10-year strategy and action plan.  He is the co-editor of the first global book on biosphere reserves, published in September 2019 by Earthscan (Routledge).
