Research Interests
I am an active researcher and have over 12 peer reviewed publications in high quality journals such as Sport and Society, Sport Education and Society, Sport Psychologist, Eco-psychology. One peer reviewed book chapter on “Discrimination in Sport”, published by Routledge and two additional papers currently under review in the areas of sociology of voluntary risk-taking and international sport migration.
I have academic conference presentations in areas as diverse as Women’s Sport History, Embodiment and the Somatised Body, Tackling Discrimination through Design Thinking, Hysteresis and Social Change, Education and Sustainable Development, Education and Transition, Addressing barriers to participation in education and physical activity.
My broad research interests are related to Sport Policy and International politics, Sport and consumption, Sociology of voluntary risk-taking, Gender and identity, Sustainability, Pedagogy, Production, reproduction, and Transition in higher education.
Member of the Scottish Centre for Olympic Research and Education (SCORE).
Professional Experience
After qualifying in youth and community work, I worked as an educational social worker in juvenile justice. In 1988, I moved to Scotland to work in Community Education as an Outdoor education specialist from 1988 to 2001. From 2001 to 2004, I worked in rural community development in Highland Perthshire. I joined the Division of Sport and Exercise Science at Abertay University in 2005 until February 2021. I am an academic tutor (part-time) at Edinburgh University, Moray House Institute of Sport and Education and teach on the MSc International Sport Management and Development Programme. Visiting Fellow at Abertay University 2021 -2023. I am a part time lecturer in social science at UHI Perth from Feb 2023.
